Elizabeth, John and Susanna Shakespeare Hall’s first (and only) child and William and Anne Shakespeare’s granddaughter, was baptized on February 21, 1608, according to the Holy Trinity Church parish register. John Hall had married Susanna Shakespeare on June 5, 1607 and Elizabeth was thus born some two weeks short of nine months. This would imply that, unless the child was born prematurely, Susanna may already have been pregnant at the time of her marriage. On the other hand, given that this establishes the fertility of both parents, it is odd that Susanna did not go on to bear further children.
The entry reads “Elizabeth dawghter to John Hall gentleman” and is in the hand of the curate, William Gilbert, alias Higges. The suffix was added in view of Hall’s profession as a physician.
