The Rape of Lucrece was first entered into Liber B of the Stationer's Company on May 9, 1594 by John Harrison (known as "the Elder" to distinguish him from his brother of the same name, also a printer and publisher). The first quarto edition was printed later that same year by Richard Field, and sold by Harrison. In this entry on March 1, 1614, in Liber C, Harrison transferred the publication rights to the popular poem to Roger Jackson. Harrison had produced five quarto editions before transferring his rights, and Jackson produced a sixth quarto edition in 1616. The poem, dedicated to the Earl of Southampton, was printed in a total of eight quarto editions before 1641.
Liber C and the other registers with Shakespeare’s works are still kept by the Stationers’ Company in their archives.
